October 30, 2022 - Dark purplish red with a lighter rim and a nose of matured fruits infused with pronounced notes of wild game, red meat, old leather, and plenty of peppery spices, tobacco and modest vanilla oak. The palate is unapologetically full-bodied, concentrated, intense and powerful as one would expect from a centenary vine Barossa Valley Shiraz of this caliber yet not over the top such as the cheaper “fruit-bomb” versions of what one usually associates to this varietal from this region. There seems to be a considerable degree of refinement and quality in this bottling given that this is in its 16th year with the prospect of at least 8 to 10 more years of life in it. The flavor profile is pretty much the same since my last tasting 3 years ago except that it has become more refined and integrated with more gaminess, bloody meat, dark chocolate some tobacco characteristics with along fruity, loamy mineral finish. As I recalled when I first tried this back in 2010 it was quite good in a primary sense with lots of big ripe jamey fruits but a bit reserve, disjointed and austere when it comes to the “other things” that I was looking for, but nonetheless, it was promising to say the least. However, I didn’t expect it to turn out this good at this juncture. I’m glad that I still have several more of these to track it's development and hopefully enjoy over the next decade or so.
