Community Tasting Note

December 5, 2022 - Napa Valley comes to Philly wine tasting at Lilah with Memento Mori, Covert/Nicholson Jones, Adamvs, Simon Family, William Cole, and Chappellet. I will offer a few notes on what stood out -- the highlights and lower lights. This was a really nice event that showcased different winemakers and different wines from all over Napa; including the valley floor and Vaca Mountains. I was able to meet and taste some of the wines with fellow CT'er sean7711 and Fiancé' as well!

I did not particularly care for this wine. It was not bad, just "meh." It seemed a little primary and disjointed for my palate.

12/5/22, 2:44 PM - Hi there. I was at that event too! Wish I had gotten to meet you and sean7711 there! The MM 2020 IMHO was better than other 2020's I recently tasted in Napa in a recent visit. Feel that the vintage doesn't wow me at all. Also didn't feel that the other wines there at the event measured up to the 2018 and 2019 MM or the Maxem chardonnay but it was fun to taste them.

12/6/22, 5:48 AM - Opportunity lost! Must admit that at this stage of my income cycle (retired), I am oversubscribed to wineries already, so I need a new one to wow me to further indulge. Most of the wines other than MM and Maxem (both of which I already buy from -- love all of Sam's wines including Arkenstone and Vangone) didn't clear the bar for me. Loved the 2018 and 2019 MM and the Maxem chard. Liked Covert, especially the 2014 cab and the cab franc, but at those prices I pass but will look to find some steals at auction sites. Didn't really like any of the Adamvs cabs on this night -- too lean and tannic for my taste. Was slightly disappointed in the Chappellet Prichard Hill cab -- not as dynamic as I hoped. Had been at the winery a couple of weeks ago and had already had the other wines they were pouring-- amazing to me how they changed their Signature cab over the last couple of vintages from a brooding/earthy beast to a more refined, early drinking cab. Cole was pleasant across the board but not exciting to me. The Simon cab was a nice simple cab but having to buy a six-pack was off-putting. I love supporting and building relationships with smaller independent wineries. How about your thoughts?

12/6/22, 6:40 AM - I thought the Simon was poured really cold, and agree the 6 pack requirement was annoying.

For Adamvs, I don't really understand why they'd pour these wines from 2018. They had a 2011 / 2014 Quintvs under the table if you asked - and they showed much better. I thought the entry wine (Teres) showed best for the 2018, which is understandable. But opening the 2018 Estate ($400/bottle) just seems silly!

Covert is pretty good, but pricing is just crazy to me. But that could be said for all of Napa!

12/6/22, 7:49 AM - I agree, for the most part, with both of you. Chappellet was okay. Cole was okay. Covert was good but too expensive. You can usually find Covert/Purlieu on the 2ndary market at much cheaper pricing.

I did buy 6 bottles of Simon as they threw in free shipping. They were going to sell me a 3-pack, but with shipping, I figured why not! in 2021, Simon has upgraded their vineyards so I wanted to get in early. Sean: I totally agree -- it was very cold. I was trying to figure out what the experience would have been like at room temp. With 6 bottles coming my way, I will be able to figure it out!
