Community Tasting Note

  • DougSamuel Likes this wine: 91 points

January 26, 2023 - Papera Ranch is one of my favorite sites for Zinfandel as it allows for such an explosion of fruit with acidity and structure.

This particular one didn't hit that mark for us. Still a nice drink (90-91 points) with raspberry, cranberry, and savory herbs. An interesting trend in Zins has been the pendulum swinging away from the ripe, opulent fruit to more structured and lean. IMO, this one has swung a touch too far for my taste. At least on this night - a snow day - I reached for this for an after playing in the snow with the kids and was hoping for a hearty wine. This was enjoyable and easy to drink, but didn't have the ripeness I prefer. It's possible it will benefit from a decant or I might have liked it better a year or more ago.

1/29/23, 4:14 AM - What I really like about your note is the way you put the critical elements in context - looking for hearty, you prefer riper, etc. Too many reviewers just downgrade with comments like "lacks ripeness".
    Thanks for the note.

2/11/23, 4:55 AM - I agree with you on the trend but we didn't experience the wine that way when I had it last night. However, I think Zin is a funny wine that can show differently in different contexts. I drank a 2018 Biale Grande earlier in the week that tasted nothing like my notes from 8 months prior.
