April 1, 2023 - This one felt significantly less ready than the 2020 Becklyn Napa cab we had recently. Lots of vanilla and very sweet fruit, with prominent oak spice on the back end. I always find the Becklyn cab to be an earlier drinking wine, so am not surprised it’s more approachable at this stage than this Quivet. As such, I’m going to hold the rest of my Quivet and Myriad 2020s for a few years to let them evolve from this very primary stage.

4/1/23, 8:26 AM - I agree with you that both the 2020 Quivet Napa and Myriad Napa cabs could use some time now. My last bottle of the 2020 Myriad around two weeks ago came across somewhat closed/not overly expressive on day one but it was quite enjoyable on day two. My last bottle of the 2020 Quivet Napa cab last week was quite a bit lighter on day one in comparison to previous bottles and the finish was somewhat lacking. However, if was also quite enjoyable on day two. I’m planning to lay the other bottles down until the end of the year. Take care.

4/1/23, 9:04 AM - Thanks for the comment, Badmonkey. I always enjoy reading your notes on Mike’s young wines. I typically enjoy his wines with a few more years on them than I think you do (based on reading your notes), but I always enjoy your early takes, as they give me an idea what to expect.

4/1/23, 9:49 AM - I feel the same way in regards to your tasting notes. I should have provided additional notes on both the 2020 Myriad Napa and Quivet Napa cabs after the recent bottles but I hate to provide too many notes on the same wines. In my opinion, Mike’s entry level cabs tend to show really well in that very early/youthful barrel tasting phase. The fruit is obviously primary but I tend to enjoy the full/expressive flavors and the purity of fruit that he tends to deliver. However, then they start to transition and need some time - that’s where I believe the 2020s are at now. I don’t believe the 2020 vintage will require as much time as the 2018 and 2019 vintages but I could be wrong. I’m still sitting on a lot of the 2018 and 2019 Becklyn Napa cab and they still require a couple years in my opinion. As you also touched upon, I prefer how the 2020 Becklyn Napa cab is drinking now vs the Myriad and Quivet. That wasn’t the case a couple months ago. Although I also believe the 2020 Becklyn Napa is also showing better on day two. Have a nice weekend.

4/1/23, 10:00 AM - I appreciate the additional input. Thanks. My wife is every bit the red wine drinker that I am, so very few wines ever see day two around here. I mean like almost never. Haha! Take care.

4/1/23, 10:40 AM - I hear you - my wife enjoys wine as well. I’ll just usually pop another bottle that I’m pretty confident is drinking well. Unfortunately it can be an expensive habit but eventually the ones that aren’t ready tend to come around.
