June 1, 2023 - Simple nose of bubblegum, bramble, and a bit of perfume. Light bodied, heavy tannins, and high acidity. Palate is plum, blackberry, bubblegum, a bit of black olive, and dark minerals. Heavy, almost to a wall, of tannins. Long finish of black tea, dark minerals, plums, and just a hint of spices.

It just doesn't feel like previous vintages. It's lacking the depth and characteristics of Ridge that I expect. If anything, this feels like an overly tannic Gamay.

6/1/23, 9:46 PM - So I (possibly foolishly) picked up a six pack of this from the winery at the tasting room associates insistence that it aged rather well. I’m not familiar much with varietal Carignane, even less with Ridge’s interpretation. I was advised by said associate to wait at least 2-3 years before opening first bottle. Based on your experience, does that hold/seem true, or would you say the associate based that also on previous renditions?

6/1/23, 10:24 PM - I think holding on to this would be wise for this vintage. There's a ton of structure and tannins that have the potential to develop.

I am not going to be in a rush to dig out the other bottle from the ATP shipment (in fact, I am not even sure where I have hidden it in the cellar). While this is always a simple bottling, in previous years there a lot more depth on the early side. Other vintages made for a great weekday night dinner wine and we always consumed our two bottles from the ATP shipment within a year and never worried too much about them.

But I am wondering of the style at Ridge is shifting in a direction that is not aligned with our palates. This is not the only recent ATP wine that has left us feeling like this.

6/2/23, 2:13 PM - I have found this bottling to always be mediocre. A good weekday drinker as mentioned, a red to start the night with or an expendable bottle to drink with those when don’t want to open something of high value. That’s why I like having it around but can easily do without it at the same time. Some of the other vintages have had some good reviews but it’s just Carignane after all. I’m concerned the drought may be impacting winemaking styles and crop management hence the “meh” factor in many of the ATP wines of late. I rarely take the full ATP releases and just handpick what I want.
