Community Tasting Note

June 7, 2023 - From magnum. Deep ruby with obvious fading at the rim. A particularly - and somewhat peculiarly - bellicose Martha's. On the nose this offers pretty classic aromas of dried black cherries, cassis, mint, pepper, a hint of black walnut and some hot, baked earth. On the palate this is medium bodied though expansive in texture, with just medium acidity. Its still quite forceful tannins ride over top of its black fruit, leather and eucalyptus flavors and the finish is notably dry. One would normally say this needs time, but I'm not sure how much fruit will be left when these tannins soften.

6/7/23, 8:56 PM - Yikes! Sad to hear. I guess I'll let my bottle sit another 10 years and hope it finally levels out......

6/8/23, 9:03 AM - Not sure how the newer vintages perform, but hoping similar too older ones...I think the fruit maybe in a semi-slumber and benefit from more time in the bottle......I have two, and hope I am right! Appreciate the note, and will likely wait a few years before tasting one. I think Mark has the right idea.

6/8/23, 10:30 AM - Jason, in spite of my well-earned reputation for committing infanticide with many of my bottles, I am still holding a '97 of this which I haven't had the balls to open and try yet......if I wait 10 more years until I'm 75yo, this '09 will be 24 then! Might be just about right.......

6/8/23, 2:04 PM - LOL Mark....I think the 97 should be drinking quite well! Of course, I would wait for the right occasion (maybe a visit to MN??!!) as there should be no hurry! Looking forward to your note!

6/9/23, 2:16 PM - Jason, I've got about 4-5 bottles of stuff that is now so old/expensive I just don't know when/if I'll have the opportunity to drink it! If I don't get moving on the '97 they may be toasting me with it at my funeral one day.........well, Carol wouldn't, she hates old wine!
