Community Tasting Note

September 30, 2023 - Opened, poured and let sit about 40 min. Then: darkish fruit on the nose. Taste almost has a grenache tinge to it, although no grenache is listed in the blend. Definitely no typical zin taste, spice, etc, although zin is listed as the predominant grape. Medium/full bodied; darkish/reddish fruit; maybe a touch of warmth, but not a problem; tannins not a problem; decent balance. That grenache-like taste persists from entry to finish; not what I was expecting or looking for. Certainly drinkable, but disappointing.

10/1/23, 10:20 PM - I'd remind you that this wine is really young still, but judging by your notes, Bedrock just isn't your jam. You ever think about selling your bottles so that you don't have to continue being disappointed? Plenty of other peeps out there who would enjoy them and happily take them off your hands :)

    10/2/23, 6:37 AM - Hi RichEB1,
I appreciate your note. I hadn't thought off my remaining bottles, even after a number of years of not finding what I was looking for in the last 8-10 years of drinking Bedrock, Carlisle, Limerick Lane zins - although Limerick Lane came closer a couple of times. I have let some age (6-8 years), but earlier seems better to my taste. I guess I kept getting sucked in by the producer notes and thinking they sounded like my style (late 1970's-early 1980's zins). Unfortunately, I'm now down to about 6 or so, mixed Bedrock and Carlisle, so selling them off probably doesn't make much sense - and I won't be buying more. And I don't dislike them (usually), so here's hoping with the remaining bottles.

10/2/23, 7:10 AM - Ahhh, gotcha! Makes total sense. So sorry the wines didn't sing for you, as those are personally some of my favorite producers (except for Limerick Lane. I was excited about them at first but was severely disappointed in how poorly they aged, plus the aggregious price increases, so I stopped buying). Have you tried Ridge recently? I feel those are still made in a more classic style, as long as you don't mind some American Oak standing out a bit when they're young. Cheers!

10/2/23, 4:33 PM - I definitely agree with your comments about Limerick Lane. The prices are ridiculous and they don't age well. A 2018 I had was fairly decent, but I'm not going back for more. Ridge was one of those that helped put zin on the map in the late 1970's and early 1980's and I've tried different versions over the last several years and they aren't bad, but something seems to be missing, maybe a bit too "mainstream" now. A last observation: I don't think that zin and high abv (14.5%) go together well. And I don't think that trying to make them bordeaux-like and age-worthy. But that's just me: both Carlisle and Bedrock seems to be doing better than ever. Maybe I'm getting old.
