December 24, 2023 - Opened one of my two bottles of the 2009 Palmer, big decision given the opportunity cost of a better drinking window. The special occasion was Christmas Eve dinner with my 83 year old mother, who has a fondness for Walmart’s house Merlot. Actually kind of humorous as we started with a 2018 Sherwin Family cab before dinner, which she loved. As we had the pregame wine, the Palmer was decanting for just under an hour and the beef tenderloin was on the grill. Upon the first few sips my mother had a slight preference for the Napa cab, but once I had her pair the two wines with the tenderloin it was a game changer. The Palmer was absolutely amazing. Notes of blackberry & cassis, hints of cedar with a touch of bitter chocolate, the wine was at a different level. End result is that this world now has one more Bordeaux fan, much at the expense of Walmart and their wine department.

12/26/23, 11:31 AM - Thanks for the great story, and glad to know this is holding up perfectly well... We have one '09 in the cellar. Enjoyed the '10 & '14 with James Sichel at a tasting event at Meadowbrook in Detroit (his & my pic w the '14 is on that vintages CT page.)

So cool w mom too. We did the same with a 10 year old Penfolds Bin 389 for my mom's bday. As a 4 buck Chuck Girl, she opened her eyes and raised her eyebrows to what a really good wine can be, with that decade bottle.

So much fun expanding loved one's understanding of what's good.

    Happy Holidays.
