January 9, 2024 - I was not prepared for this wine as I had become accustomed to drinking "Im Pittersberg" from the same producer in later vintages from2015 and onwards. This has been resting in my cellar for who knows how long. The color is evolved straw, verging on golden, but still with some CO2 left. The nose is marked by quite heavy oak in the from of coconut and vanilla, and it is quite hard to find any Riesling tones here. Full bodied, almost oily attack on the palate. On the mid-palate, the classic Riesling tones kick in, especially green apples, but also that high-strung acidity. The whole is framed in a voluptuous sweet spice-whole with lots of vanilla and coconut. Fresh citrusy aftertaste accompanied with cocoa and a tone of white chocolate. A really fine wine, but so far from the more modern GG Rieslings that is possible to come. An interesting experiment from the time that German Riesling from the best plots should taste like white Burgundy. This wine will keep for many years, but it is extremely interesting and fun to drink now. We had it with a baked monkfish, and it was delicious.
