Community Tasting Note

February 11, 2024 - Bafflingly mace and nutmeg heavy on opening, little else. Eventually opens up with leather, strawberry and an almost Barolo like tar. Bitter chocolate on the finish. Returning five hours later, I see little improvement.
Clearly opened very early but even so, very unforgiving and rather lacklustre.

(Before you all have a strop, I use much more of a score range than your redundant 89-95)

2/11/24, 1:42 PM - 58 is undrinkable. I assume you tossed most of this?

I too use the full scale but after reading all your notes do not think you are applying the excellent (90+), very good (85-89), good (80-84), average (70-79), has a significant flaw (60-69), and flawed (50-59) scale as I would, nor as I learned the scale. The last wine I rated in the 50's had smoke taint.

It would be helpful to know whether you decant or not.

Also, unforgiving and lacklustre are almost opposites - like "hard" and "flabby".

2/11/24, 2:18 PM - Undrinkable would be less than 10/100, that’s what use of the *full* scale means.

2/12/24, 5:10 AM - Just my two cents: If everyone used their own scale for ratings, Cellartracker would be for no use to anyone.

2/12/24, 7:12 AM - Your point is well-taken. Two thoughts: 1) wines that have more notes/scores tend to iron out this difference, as outliers become relatively less important, and 2) for me at least, I’ve come to the point where, what people (particularly my CT friends) say is more important than how they score the wine, both in terms of quality and qualities. May be the best we can hope for, since everyone is ultimately going to do what they want. Cheers.

2/12/24, 12:01 PM - Maybe you could put your score in the notes, and then convert it to the standard 100 point system for the actual score?

  • theraredram commented:

    2/13/24, 1:01 AM - No.

2/13/24, 2:35 AM - What are you trying to accomplish by using a different scoring range to everyone else on this app?

    2/13/24, 2:40 AM - Pandemonium.

2/13/24, 6:48 PM - It seems like you are being purposefully divisive as some kind of pathetic attention grab. Using some other nonsensical scale is not helpful for the community.

2/14/24, 2:33 AM - I didn’t start this chatter nor the one currently having a strop dear James.
