September 17, 2010 - 100% Aglianico, from Basilicata in the very south of Italy. Deep ruby colour, with a garnet tinged rim. Intense nose; aromas of ripe plum, supported with blackberries, blueberries, potpourri, baking chocolate, a certain burnt sugar character, and a thick, tarry earthiness. Medium-full bodied, and nicely balanced; ripe and sweet but not quite jammy fruit flavours are balanced with bitter chocolate, leather and tarry, smoky graphite earthiness. Tannins are slightly gritty but well integrated, and come through on the sinewy finish. Supported structurally by a seam of bright acid. Good length and real intensity. A characterful wine especially for its price.
