August 11, 2006 - See edit note at end. Day one. Upon opening, this is just a dark funky nose with nice fruit underneath. The funk however is so overpowering that it's difficult to get to any of the flavors underneath. It's sort of a meat-locker thing, but not in a good way - more like meat that's going bad and growing lots of mold. Really not sure how to describe it. Would normally have decanted but this was a last minute pull from the cellar. Hopefully with a bit more air this will improve. Decided to leave it for another day and retry. Day 2. After being vacu-vinned over night, opened and allowed to breathe for about 2-2.5 hours. Noticeable better than last night; the funk has dissipated somewhat and the fruit is nicer. However, the funk is still there and the wine underneath is marred by a fairly aggressive acidity. It's difficult when a wine has such wonderful fruit but is marred by problems like this. Ultimately, while not a bad wine, I really didn't enjoy this.

Edited to remove the rating (which was 86) and mark as flawed. Enough knowledgeable people seem to think this was a flawed bottle that I'm going to assume it was.
