April 5, 2011 - Gorgeous and distinctive. On the third day after opening this wine I'm still processing the experience. We drank this over three nights, each night showing us a different layer of what I think is a monumental wine. Concentrated and dense, the wine coats the glass with a viscous sheen of deep purple. Flavors: blackberry and dark fruit, rich yet with a bright edge, laced across a structure of deep, dark cacao and new leather. Even on the first night, this wine was impressive -- not a fruit bomb, not a big hot roiling dose of alcohol, but balanced and acidic enough to perform well with food. It just got better and better and better, a complexly nuanced partner to each dish with which it was paired. By the time I was ready to take the last sip of the last glass, I was swept with emotion, as if I were saying goodbye to a living thing -- sad to see this bottle end, and already feeling nostalgic for the ends of the future bottles I hope to live to drink. What I have left of this won't be drunk for some time -- the last one perhaps when my son (already developing a sensitive palate and appreciation for wine) is my age. We both agreed that it will only get better.
