  August 1, 2011 - Merlot in Chianti, a new innovation, especially from the Brolio parcels which is hilly, semi-clay soil, and lots of sunshine. Casalferro is 100% Merlot. Open for 1 hour to breathe. Ruby red rim. Nose notes of prunes, cherries, oak, hints of earth and musty forest floor. Balanced acid and tannin, dry fruity palate, pomegranate, light structured layer with easy approachable character. Medium finish with firm oaky tannin. I still think that the terroir may not bring out the best of its Merlot, thus the wine is tentatively bit of dry, less fruits and structures, though tannin is present. May keep for 5 years, probably improve.
