September 1, 2011 - An effectively very traditional take on Rioja that oozes personality and class. This wine glides across the palate like mercury with precision and focus. Aromatically very interesting with crushed red fruit, tea leaf, old leather, cola, and spices with a backdrop of sage and earthy mushroom tones. The wine has a Burgundian sensibility although a bit more savory and the finish goes on and on and fades into tasty roasted coffee and balsamic notes. One of the best recent offerings from Rioja and as I see it, a seering reactionary critique on the modernly styled, monolithic beasts that more and more producers are starting to release in this time-tested region. Hopefully this is the antidote to the current trends, I will be looking forward to future Valbuena releases as this one is drinking fantastically now and will improve for 10-12 years at the very least.
