September 3, 2011 - Croatian wine is not that well known outside of its own country and I have to admit to being clueless about any wines from this country before arriving in Dubrovnik on a short holiday. I was pleasantly surprised.
Plavac Mali is probably the best indigenous grape variety and it is purported that it is the granddaddy to California's Zinfandel and on tasting the similarities assault the senses.
A beautiful ruby colour with wafts of plums and ripe red fruit this provides a lovely sunburst of flavours. High in alcohol but never any overbearing ethanol on the nose nor high tannins.
I love Zinfandel but I love this too. Dingac is one of the best producers, along with Grgic and if you get a chance to taste some Plavac Mali you won't be disappointed (although best of luck finding any outside Croatia - I've so far tried 4 of the wine merchants I use without success).2,941 views
