September 20, 2011 - Interesting and Delicious Tempranillo
    Tasted February 2011
Color is deep garnet, about two-thirds opaque with highlights of ruby around the edges and brownish-purple darker tones in the middle of the glass.
Pleasant and intriguing smell: Immediately one detects apothecary alcohol, followed by sweet bonfire, beef jerky, and a whiff of road dust. Decanting produces the gentle bouquet of a strawberry garden.
The wine offers a silky body, a bit of acidity on the tounge, and modest tannins.
Tasted on its own, the tempranillo reveals unusual flavors – canned green beans and a hint of oak. After some decanting, delicious vanilla beans and buttery biscuits covered with strawberry preserves took over. With food, the wine’s fruity deliciousness asserts itself further and the body lightens to that of a California pinot noir.
Aftertaste is a modest, savory portion of charred pork t-bone. The next day, the finish is sweeter – it reminds one of thick glaze of dark cherries and hickory wood.
This Ribera del Duero makes for a fascinating wine on its own. Tasted with broiled grass-fed burgers and sweet potato fries it was absolutely full and delicious.
