September 23, 2011 - Who knew Pinot could be this ripe? I never really had Sea Smoke in its prime, and I was really surprised by this. On the nose are aromas of ripe cherries, vanilla, and a sweet muskiness (I know, I'm stretching it here). On the palate are flavors of jammy cherries and raspberries, oak and hints of cardamom, that carry on to a long finish. Though this seems impossibly big --for a Pinot, the wine still maintains balance, with surprisingly fresh acidity. However, this seems a bit monolithic, and is missing the mystique one associates with Pinot Noir, which is present in most of the Pinots coming out of Sta. Rita Hills. Stil, this a lovely wine that will be sure to please fans of these pleasure-bent wines.
