April 18, 2013 - A medium-dark reddish-ruby color; a little yellowing on the rim this time. The wine was initially aerated with a vinturi. Then, complex aromas and flavors of cherry, blackberry, earth, touches of red rose perfume, violets, some tar, spice and a discreet amount of toasty oak. Big, rich and full bodied. Elegant in the mouth. The tannin is mostly resolved but still noticeable, with a slight acidic sting on the tongue. Very nice balance and structure; the acid is powerful enough for making this a very nice food wine. Paired nicely with a ribbed pork roast, with a slight amount Louisiana spice. Yummy! As the night goes on, the tar in the wine seems more prevalent and the rose perfume abates. An extended finish that seems more expansive on the back palate. The wine has several years left before hitting its apogee, but it’s very appreciable now.
