October 28, 2014 - The wines of Canale's Matteo Correggia with Brigitta Correggia (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Brachetto is usually made into a sparkling sweet wine, but early on they "didn't have the technology to stop the fermentation." Still, this wine smells sweet. It's quite vibrant, with candied menthol notes. The palate is soft but prickly. It's tart and creamy but has this odd fake fruit thing going on. Like a Vicks cough drop. It's more of this menthol cherry cough drop on the finish. Really, I didn't find this very drinkable at all.

9/20/16, 7:49 AM - The scale exists for the whole world of wine. There are plenty of wines that I generally choose not to drink that score in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. And yes, I generally choose not to drink wines that I personally rate in the low 80s, even though for the whole world of wine they rate what cellartracker's interpretation of the scale lands in "good". For wines crafted by traditional producers like Correggia, it's pretty rare to find something scoring 81. There are so many more choices out there in the world that I don't have to drink wines that I only enjoy at an 81 point level, or "good". I shoot for more, even though if served at a party where wine wasn't the focus I may continue to consume this wine, if I am to sit down with focus on it, I wouldn't find it drinkable in that setting. There's just too much better wine out there.

9/20/16, 12:03 PM - I understand. Neither am I a friend of wines I rate in the lower end of 80's. However, what made me wonder was the discrepancy between "not drinkable" and score not lower than 81. I mean, to me, "not drinkable" on its own sounds something like 50-60 to me! A wine with a score of 81 to me would be a well-made one, but probably quite boring and lacking in character. Not drinkable? Too harsh.

Although occasionally I might come across a wine that is definitely well-made and deserves a score in the range of, say, 85-90. But it is so heavily over-oaked that it is undrinkable to me. So I get your point. However, I would still put it differently.

And I would disagree with you on Matteo Correggia being a traditional producer. They are a really high-class producer and one that actually drew focus on Roero, but most of their wines are quite modern in style and they employed really new world style of using new barriques and such in their red wines until very recently. Luckily they are currently toning a bit down on their new oak aging regime.
