June 27, 2015 - A little evolved in appearance, almost dark yellow. Lots of yeast, brioche, citrus and pear, with quite a bit of acid and minerality. Palate was a little short, and slightly disjointed. Chinese pear, fresh lime and green apple with lots of acid again. In comparison to the Doms of 02 and 03, this falls a little short on complexity and balance.

6/28/15, 10:08 PM - Thanks. Interesting observations. Did you feel, perhaps, it was a bit too young?

6/28/15, 10:19 PM - Well, its a little of a tough one. If the wine is too young and I sense the potential from the structure and underlying fruit or complexity, I would flag that out, but this Dom didn't strike the right notes. For the same price point, I'd get the 03, and for perhaps that extra $20-$30, I'd very much prefer the 02.

6/28/15, 10:58 PM - Thanks. We definitely prefer the 2002 and 2003, at least at the moment. Having said that, we really like the 1999 now. Dunno...we have sipped three bottles this year, and we thought very little yeast, brioche and/or toast, albeit you could feel it coming around the bend. we have quite a few bottles so will keep on sipping and writing :-)

6/28/15, 11:02 PM - I wouldn't go as far as to say it was heat damaged, but the storage/transportation conditions could definitely have been better.

I think Dom needs age, I had a 1980 which was superb sometime last year. That said, I would say 98/99/00 are in a good drinking window with some age on them.

6/29/15, 5:32 PM - Provenance and logistics always difficult. We try to buy directly from Chateau or one merchant who obtains directly from Chateau. Storage mostly at home where we have a cellar that requires constant attention given the high humidity in our area. Never-ever a dull moment. Good luck with any other bottles you may have.

7/1/15, 1:31 AM - That particular bottle was brought by a friend. Of course in an ideal scenario, I would get all my Burgundies ex domaine. Unfortunately, the reality is that the back vintages would have gone through perhaps a couple of merchants at least. At times, we are subject to the luck of the draw.

7/1/15, 1:33 AM - Sadly, you are correct. We got lucky with Haut-Brion's Ex Chateau auction. A major wow!!! We know several European and Asian merchants that buy en primeur so very reliable. Otherwise, onwards and upwards with the great experimentation world...until Bordeaux hopefully ends the en primeur system ;-)
