July 18, 2015 - Opened with an immediate nose of cloves, spices, cinnamon and sweet sappy black berries, consistent with the palate. Then a 2 hour slow ox reveals more flowers, earth, mushrooms and herbs that I also enjoyed in the Cappellano rupestris 05. Constantly evolving while the acidity maintains poise and verve as it paired perfectly with lamb ragu. Although it develops with air, I must stress that it was an absolute delight from the first pour to the last.

Some drink highly rated wines to convince themselves of greatness. Some drink highly rated wines to convince others of greatness. This is a wine that sets out to prove nothing. I enjoyed this wine for what it is: a marvelously pure, complex and delicious expression of Barolo in a tough vintage. While people clamor for the 2010 (and yes, it is sensational), this 2005 is a gem of a wine for those who are into truly understanding the subject matter rather than just following media hype.
