Community Tasting Note

January 15, 2016 - Two-hour Vinturi decant. Still tannic and a bit musty with tobacco and earthy notes most prominent. I've been waiting for years for bottle age to justify this purchase, but it's just not happening. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT and since this was my first foray into this vineyard, I think I'm bailing...no thanks! When the threshold is a hundred bucks, expectations are high. Goodbye!

1/16/16, 7:05 AM - Montrose wines are built to live as long some people. When they do release their tannic tension, there is something very profound revealed from underneath that is not replicable without aging a green wine. That's why most young Montrose cost a fraction of a well cellared, aged Montrose. With that said, if you want to understand this wine, try the 1989 and 1990 side by side. I can definitely understand your frustration my friend. I have many bottles of 06' and read the community's notes periodically for the opening of the drinking window (which I think will start in 5 years)..Why the hell do you think these collections grow to outrageous proportions? :-) Seriously, try an older one...The 1996 is incredible too!

This was my first foray into the vineyard and I guess I became a whiney child waiting for Christmas Day to arrive. I'll heed your sage advice, wait, and revisit those Montrose bottles that have had a chance to nap before I wake them from their slumber and decant them to my glass.
Cheers, all, and thank you for your wisdom! Those who can't learn a lesson from those who've been there are fools who rush in when they should be learning from their elder wino brothers!
