March 7, 2016 - Wow. This is interesting (and I don't mean that in the "I'm trying to be polite even though it don't like it" way). The nose is full of plums, olives (light), pencil shavings and dark cherries. I'm reminded of not quite young, but not quite matured Bordeaux. Initially I caught hints of herbal cab fruits, meaty syrah notes and what I can only call a merlot smell (that I can’t describe, but to paraphrase Justice Stewart, I know it when I smell it). On the palate it’s juicy and full. The fruit is dark red, plums and cherries from the nose mixed with graphite and an earthy spice, all supported by chalky, slightly sharp but smooth tannins and a crisp, polished acidity. It finishes long and astringent with fresh, tart, crunchy darker fruit. It's slightly lean but svelte with an odd mix of a meaty but herbal profile, I'm assuming from the syrah/cab blend. The last glass was unfortunately all but wasted thanks to my own mistreatment of the sediment. Regardless, I greatly enjoyed this wine that is drinking quite well right now.
