April 8, 2016 - Purple with ruby edge. Fine, multi-faceted nose of spicy oak, vanilla extract, tobacco, black liquorice, sake, black truffles, milk chocolate, coffee bean and some barnyard. Surprisingly light and soft entry with a palate of plum, blackberry currant, cassis, spicy oak, milk chocolate, and a nice build up of sweet cherry and anise in the middle, before a somewhat drying finish. Stylistically not really a Saint Julian for me, but a wine with both New World and Old World traits: something between a cold-vintage Margaux and a mid-level Sonoma Valley cuvee (think Sebastiani). This is not a profound, big wine at all (I would have never bought this in the first place except that the futures pricing of around $30 was very attractive at the time), but it is s subtle, somewhat voluptuous and well made for food pairings. Drink now and over the next 5 years.
