January 12, 2017 - M&M (Montrachet & Musigny) at Nicolas. Final Musigny in a flight of 3. Ruby red, touch of bricking at the rim. This looked the oldest and it was quite clear this was the 2000, and very very different to a bottle I had about 18 months ago. There was a really lovely exotic nose of rose petals, bandung (rose syrup with milk), pine, fresh leather, Arabic spice, cherries and red kiwis. The palate really struggled to keep up with the awesome bouquet. To the others, there was the typical Mugnier elegance and softness, but I felt the wine was somewhat tired. There were some sour cherries, wet earth, tobacco and tea leaf, and with extended time, the latter 2 characteristics were quite prominent. This is consistent with my thoughts that Mugnier wines show brilliantly in the beginning with a really lovely exotic and ethereal bouquet but by the end of a 3 hour dinner, the wines somewhat fade away slowly. A good wine, but really not as good as the previous bottle I consumed.
