January 26, 2017 - One of my all-time favorite Heitz wines...never has disappointed, and continues to show its immortality. Total cork failure though...funny, as I was just telling a friend how great Heitz corks are...so of course this one crumbled in the bottle. Well...didn't affect the wine at all, except for some cork bits. Dark as a barrel sample...plum, black cherry, currants, blackberry fruits...wonderful dusty old cellar/cedar spice, dried herbs, graphite powder. Silky smooth on the palate, yet plenty of structure for future age...in fact you can totally tell there is reserve in everything, holding a little back for that one day it really takes off! Aged nuances of leather, walnut oil, beef bouillon, rich compost round out this perfectly balanced beauty! Great wine, with a lot of great memories attached to it. Always going to be a lifetime wine for me.

Any notes on decanting? I already planned to filter out the decant for sediment and cork (planning on it). Wondering if you can remember any notes on the decant time.

    Best,

4/1/17, 7:50 AM - I usually don't decant older ca cabs for too long, just a little air and enjoy its progression through the bottle. This wine is still pretty youthful, so it can take the decant...I'd say up to an hour or so should be perfect. Post a note when you drink it...enjoy!
