May 13, 2017 - Other than Blackbird, this is my first Pott wine.

Do not make the same mistake I made and put this wine straight into a Decanter for at least 2 hrs. Do not venturi, pnp, slow Ox or Coravin ... straight to a decanter.

I did not decant at first and simply slowed ox for 2 hrs and poured through a venturi. The wine had a dark ruby core with a violet rim. The nose was muted only expressing iron aromas with hints of plum, cassis and alcohol. The palate had some plums, and licorice but even this was overwhelmed by the alcohol. It reads 14.7abv but it was drinking like a 17+ wine.

I decided to decant and let sit for 1 hr. This helped and made the wine drinkable but after another 90 minutes ntje wine started to come into its own into a very structured, layered and interesting wine. The nose became expressive with licorice, plums, flowery notes, cassis, blue berry pie and black cherry. The palate smoothed out nicely with really nice layered flavors of plums, licorice, cassis, iron, and oak. This wine has a really nice and bright acidity, grainy but we'll integrated tannins, round mid palate that leads to a nice mid/long finish.

This feels like a wine that will benefit with some bottle time, but very good none the less..... remember that here air is your friend.

5/14/17, 7:12 AM - Great note. I had a similar experience - this guys really needs some air right now in order to show well.

FWIW, would recommend the single vineyard Pott wines. They have more depth as well as focus. And they age great. If you can get your hands on a 2012, should be drinking really well.

5/14/17, 7:38 AM - I second that on Pott's single vineyard wines. Though I haven't had his $60 Buck Chuck yet, many of Aaron's SVDs are pretty great; less overt than the Mike Smith and TRB genres, but quality and concentration (and relative QPR) are notable. The Arsenal in 2013 is amazing. As ageverett mentioned, some 2012s are drinking good right about now (though I'd bet with another year or two in bottle they will improve even more). I've had some 2007s fairly recently that were absolutely phenomenal. A 2007 Kaliholmanok was a perfect specimen of a unique Napa Valley wine. Happy hunting!

8/16/17, 7:59 PM - I've been looking for Pott's SVD's and can't find them anywhere. It's my first time buying Potts wines so by the time I got my allocation the SVDs we're all gone. Hopefully I'll get some of the '15s

8/16/17, 9:52 PM - 2015 yields are going to be rough allocation-wise, but I'm sure you'll be able to get some. A number of Pott's SVDs are available on the secondary market (check out Wine-Searcher), especially 2014. Some are way marked up; others are near release price.
