Community Tasting Note

  • GonzaloManzaneda Likes this wine: 80 points

10/3/17, 3:08 AM - 80 for a barolo from Altare? Very average wine?

10/3/17, 3:10 AM - 80 points seems me a fair score right now. This wine needs time in bottle, as I said in my review.

10/3/17, 11:25 AM - It does strike me too as inconsistent with the way the rating system works to rate a wine poorly because it is drunk too young.

10/4/17, 6:41 AM - At the end is just a score and one comment, anyone is going to die for these 80 points.
Right now this wine is just an 8 under my point of view, let's see how it will becamo inside the bottle. However, the score keeps recorded the date when I posted it. I don't see any better way to understand how this wine could improve with some years that drink it young and try to re-drink it in some years. Does any of you have a better approach to do it?

Also, as I always do in my scores, keep in mind the price of the botlle. It was almost 100€ in Spain. Come on! Do you will honestly pay 100€ for it?

10/4/17, 7:27 AM - Thanks. I would argue that scores need to incorporate a forward looking element in the case of wine that are experienced before even early maturity, anticipating what they might become. If not, no wine tasted young, en primeur or in cask will ever achieve a rating higher than the bottom of the scale and in a way that is misleading. To answer your question, I have not pulled this wine out of storage yet. :-) interesting debate anyway. All the best

10/4/17, 11:36 PM - I don't think that cost of a wine is relevant only of the quality. A major part in the price tag is also the area, Barolo is an expensive place. I've had Xinomavro from Naoussa in the 15-20 euro range that were better than 70-100 euro Barolos. It's not about how much quality you buy, it's about what you buy. I also agree that a 80p wine cannot turn into a 95p wine when it ages. Anyways, we should guys share a bottle together and have another nice dialogue!!

10/6/17, 8:02 AM - @P-M: Agree with you, we should incorporate some of these info. By the way, it always good to taste them in an early stage, otherwise would be impossible to determinate how they have changed during the years.

Please, dont take it out yet! We tasted it during a class focused in Barolo, that was probably why we tasted it that young. At the end the class was made by a shop of wines in Barcelona and the usually do not store wines.

Also, Barolo is not a easy understandable wine, these botteles were my first Barolo ever. But with these price tags and having Rioja that close... It always nice to try different things but these kind of Barlos won't be my first option if I will be willing to expend 100€ for a bottle of wine.

10/6/17, 8:08 AM - @fat.metheny: agree with you. But the price is relevant for your expectations. When I buy a bottle of wine for 5€, I usually do not expect much of it, even if I know that I am buying a decent wine for this price. Normally, when I rate them I take into account the price, won't be fair to expect the complexity of a Gran Reserva in these cases.

Barolo is an expensive area, I agree. At the very end, this is a question of offer and demand, if they are able to sell their wine in that price tag...

Whenever you want, winelover will be always welcome at my place! Give me a shout if you are in town!
