very very nice pure cherries, blackberries, hint of tar, bit of plum and some tobacco. fruit is dominant over those other, very interesting ingredients.
What struck me the most is the freshness of this wine. It is a real joy and you keep coming back to it.
after a very interesting nose, the palate fulfills the promeses you smelled.

finish is quite long and warm and rewarding. The tannins are there but not distracting to me. together with scidity that just delivers the right amount of freshness it forms the backbone of this great wine.
    Sangiovese at its best.
I am not certain if the wine will really improve with age. it will change, it will soften down a bit and develop those out of this world mature Sangiovese notes... but it is just so joyful now...
It will keep at least 25 years. Il Poggione has a reputation for aging and the 2001 Riserva will prove why... mark my words.

I am certain now: Il Poggione is the QPR-king of Montalcino.
The normale was also a joy.
