January 10, 2018 - A Study of Falletto di Serralunga (La Pizza Fresca): I consider myself lucky to have tasted the ‘04 Falletto twice in under a month. Here I found a dark beast of a wine, with almost meaty, rich sous boix on the initial whiff, which gave way to a stunning display of tar and roses, with black cherry and a sweet mix of holiday spice, florals, and crushed stone minerality. On the palate, I found silky textures balanced by juicy acidity, as the wine coated the senses in a wave of ripe cherry, spices and sweet tannin. It finished long with palate-staining tart red fruits, spice, and sweet herbs. This hardly budged throughout the night, showing just as dark, burly, and ripe--yet balanced, from the first pour to the last.
