February 23, 2018 - (Decanted and drank over three hours.) Nearly four years ago I thought this wine was coming along nicely but it has not really budged much since then. If anything, it has closed down a bit and gotten a tad sullen. The color is still quite dark and the nose remains expressive with blackberry, plum, sage, coffee and mellow oak notes. In the mouth there is gorgeous black and red fruit infused with spring herbs, mocha and vanilla bean. There is also a racy acidity providing verve and interest. However, the wine’s flavors and energy are nearly hidden beneath a bushel of still unresolved tannins. Luckily these tannins are sweet and soften nicely after a very long airing. This Éloge has so much potential but patience is required for it to balance. It should be a marvel in four to six years. 94+++ points.
