May 12, 2018 - Mike Smith Tasting and Wine Dinner PART #2: The best showing of this wine ever. Totally compelling; totally enthralling. A complete package of class and pleasure. All previous notes apply, except that this just shot to the moon in every positive aspect this evening. Intensity and richness playing in perfect harmony. So much energy and verve, without the overly acidic bite that I sometimes get from this wine. Complexity and concentration were impeccable. Drinking great now, but another year in bottle might even bring this flavor-adventurous swashbuckler to even greater heights.

Everything was in the right place. I could’ve grabbed this bottle, sat in a corner contemplating life, and just be happy for the rest of the night. Alas, I had other “business” to attend to… namely some 2016 barrel samples with my name on them. Tally-Ho!

5/14/18, 9:46 PM - Nice note on the 2015 Carter Weitz CSIMM. This 2015 is the best Weitz that Carter has produced to date in my experience, I'm so happy that I have a few bottles squirreled away. With 2016's being bottled, the 2015 vintage will be a tough act to follow. I can hardly wait to find out.

5/15/18, 9:06 AM - Indeed, the 2015 Carter Weitz is showing really well. That evening it was the best I’ve ever experienced from that wine. The sweet tannic grip was insanely refined and chiseled, but also unctuous and provocative. “A va-va-voom” body to be sure. It made the ‘15 Materium seem like an awkward flat-chested plastic doll.

I’m certainly curious to see what 2016 has to offer in the form of the Carter Weitz. It has been a little too acidic for me at times (in the beginning vintages), but 2015 made me a true believer!

5/16/18, 8:46 PM - Yes, a very solid wine and the best Weitz yet. Your comparison of the 2015 Materium is quite amusing. I have never tried the Materium, but I do have a 2013 Amoenus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in the cellar and if 2016 Carter Weitz is anything close to the 2015 vintage, there will probably be no need for me to pay twice the price for would be comparable to a "bird in the hand". Some of these wine labels are getting a bit too pricey for me. I get extended enjoyment from a fine cognac and single malt scotch for a few Benjamin's. Don't get me wrong, I drink more wine that I do spirits, but I'm pretty selective when it comes to Cabs that run over $200 or $300.

5/16/18, 9:14 PM - As you should be (selective). $200-300 bucks for a bottle of wine is friggin' expensive. I start getting desensitized and before I know it I think $300 is a "reasonable" price for a bottle of "good" wine. It's kinda crazy when you take a step back. I mean, I love geeking-out as much as the next wine-o, but it starts getting kinda silly. Anyway, I'll still pay a steep tariff for a special wine, but when a $200 bottle of wine is just "ok," then something is wrong. Luckily, the Weitz seems to be on a good path. I think the 2015 Materium will end up a good bottle of wine; but right now, it's wonky as all heck.

...And yes, a great bottle of Scotch that'll last me months and months is sometimes a MUCH better buy than a .750 bottle of wine that is dead and gone in one night.
