Community Tasting Note

November 28, 2018 - Chateau Latour - 30 year vertical (1983-2010) tasted blind (Switzerland): The nose is very primary here. Fresh crunchy red and some blue fruit, missing complexity. The palate also on the lean side. Harmless I wrote down. The wine did not find many friends and a gasp went through the room when it was revealed that it was the 2005. Jean-Marc Quarin commented that he always felt that the 2005 was weak in the context of the vintage, probably picked to early he speculated. Apparently the wine maker was dismissed after this vintage, which suggests that the owners were not happy either with what was produced in that year at Latour. A shame! In any case, have to revisit this to see if this sub-par performance is a 1-off or not.

2/7/19, 8:07 PM - Sounds very much like you had an off bottle or it was in a dumb phase. I’d retry from another source.

2/7/19, 11:08 PM - That may well be the case. Do you have better recent experience? Would be interesting to compare notes.

2/8/19, 5:22 PM - Not recently. I last had it in late 2012 but I didn't take notes. The structure was there but very closed. As they say, there are no good wines, just good bottles. I've have some aged Guigal lalalas 1991 and 1989 as well as Haut Brion(86) and Mouton 1982 in the past 10 years and was underwhelmed. Don't know why that is.

8/1/21, 9:53 AM - Thank you Liteitonfire. Did you find it tannic ? Any thoughts on approachability in terms of years?

  • LiteItOnFire commented:

8/1/21, 10:03 AM - The wine was simply delicious. Were there still tannins- absolutely as this will age for a very long time but it will continue to soften through the years.
