November 29, 2018 - Decided to finally give this a shot after a local store has been pushing this wine on me, however, I've been somewhat reluctant in light of the 86 rating from Lisa Perrotti-Brown of WA. A pleasant surprise and in my opinion a big miss from WA. Dark purple fruit - blackberry, dark currants, dark cherry, and a little plum. Smooth mid-palate coupled with solid depth/concentration and a nice purity. Nice vibrant/rich flavors of dark berries, some spice, and a little plum. Fairly long finish. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking quite well after the decant despite its youth. From what was conveyed to me, this is apparently the first vintage that is solely derived from Beckstoffer fruit - primarily Beckstoffer G3 along with Missouri Hopper and Bourn. In my opinion, a little better than the 94 rating from Jeb Dunnuck. 100% cab.

11/29/18, 12:33 PM - Glad you decided to try it. It has been one of my favorite pick ups in the secondary market this year.

11/29/18, 12:51 PM - Thanks for your notes because your thoughts actually swayed me. I don't see how Lisa Perrotti-Brown could rate this wine 86 points - maybe just a bad day. I'll probably buy some more - I love how the 2015s are drinking right now despite their youth. Take care.

11/30/18, 7:41 AM - Nice note Badmonkey, is $170 is the going price for this wine?

  • JLuch1 commented:

11/30/18, 7:44 AM - I have been able to acquire some for $150, but with some persuasion.

11/30/18, 7:52 AM - I paid $155. I looked around online afterwards and I couldn't find it cheaper. My understanding is fairly small production - especially with the 2015 vintage.

11/30/18, 8:00 AM - Thanks JLuch1 and Badmonkey. I'm going to place Brilliant Mistake on the radar. At a 86 rating from WA, this may just show up at a boutique wine shop somewhere.

1/26/19, 8:07 PM - Badmonkey, the tasting was great. They had 2 vintages of their white wine and three vintages of their cab. I bought an additional 2 bottles of the 2014's and 2 of the 16's. Good price on the 14 $150. I don't think you will be able to find anymore of the 14's as even the owners don't have anymore.
Interestingly, the 14 did not use beckstoffer grapes and it was my favorite of the 3 vintges, more ready to drink now. I think the 16's have great promise though. I like age on my cabs and try to cellar them for awhile. The owners were really nice, interesting, fun people.

1/27/19, 3:45 AM - Michigan dogs, I'll have to stop by there this week. I haven't had the 2014 vintage yet so maybe I'll grab a couple bottles - assuming they're still available. Thanks again.

1/27/19, 4:29 PM - I would call first, Nick might be able to find a bottle, but my impression was it was the last of the 14's. I have 4 bottles so your best chance might be coming to one of my tastings.
