March 10, 2019 - Dark red with purple tinges, very high optical density and medium plus to high reflectivity. Quickly developing medium plus width tears followed by very slow forming and running thin tears. Appealing aromas of blueberry, aromatic compounds (not quite tar, but lifted in nature), and rose pedals. The intensity builds over time, and develops some meaty-savoury components along with spices and leather. The palate is very full bodied, with fresh acidity and a dense feeling with some tannic bite. Texture is broad and a bit wrinkled; not rustic or open-grained, but rather polished with ridges. Very young feeling wine, with a lot of structure. Flavours on the attack are blueberry, sour cherry, and tart raspberry, mixed in a way that is juicy but savoury (definitely not sweet!). The midpalate picks up with spicy smoked meats and herbs- almost like wave overtaking the fruit on the attack, but still allow some mixing of the two at the interface...... quite interesting. The final transition shows dried tobacco and oak spices, with some warming fruit and plenty of spices and tar. Very raw and powerful in a sense with a tannic bite that leaves a lingering dried leather finish for medium length. Overall, the intensity here is high, and there is just a bit of complexity wanting, but not because there is no depth. I suspect just more age is the ticket.

This is powerful, big, young wine. Very flavourful and showing plenty of modern flair that Super Tuscans are known for, but in a very new way. While this certainly feels like an old world wine, there is something vivid and fresh here, with a character all its own. Actually, really really good wine, not generic blended power red. Awesome, and right up my alley. But, I would decant for an hour or hold this in the cellar a few years!
