March 16, 2019 - For $20 a bottle this is one of the best QPR's in my recent memory. The Piedirosso grape has been part of Campanian wine culture since Roman times, and apparently is not often seen in pure ‘varietal’ form. This is my first ever tasting of this varietal.

It was a vibrant ruby red with very subtle purplish hue. The nose was super fresh and alive. Aromas of black currant, raspberry, cranberry, florals, smoke, minerals and hints of black pepper. In this sense, it was like pinot noir to me with subtle syrah characteristics. It was medium bodied mouth feel with some bright acidity to make the mouth water. There was good tannin structure to balance out that acidity. On the palate it was more bright red fruits of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, a bit if black pepper and minerality, dustiness not unlike Pinot but more grit like Syrah. I am fascinated by this wine and eager to search out other expressions and bottles.

This is definitely ready to drink now with a 30 minute decant or so. I decanted for about 45 minutes and the wine got better, more expressive and interesting as the night went on.
