May 25, 2019 - This is as good a young red as you’ll ever drink (heavens knows why in my note on the 2016 I didn’t rate it in same league as 12, 13, 15, 16 - possibly confused it with the shy but fine 14 Shiraz Mataro).

Five years old but fresh as a daisy, as the bright crimson with little rim-fade suggests. The nose is loaded with berries - blackberry/raspberry coulis - and savoury spice, then trademark Wendouree rust, coal dust (yes I cleaned out the fireplace as a kid in NZ) and gum.

An astonishingly good palate. More fresh dark berries mingle with fine fibrous tannin, the superb acid balancing it all. Long finishing. The first taste prompted thoughts of Cabernet, not the flavour but the aristocratic structure. Superb.

Made me recall the tale of when, during a roadshow of top Australian wine in Europe, the venerable Michael Broadbent MW tasted the 1996 Wendouree Shiraz in London and stated ‘Latour tannins’!
