August 13, 2019 - Eight weeks after the prior: Again bright, deep, with lovely savory / mineral character. Highly enjoyable over three nights.

8/15/19, 2:56 PM - Hi, friend. Planning on picking up some of the Rhys Hillside bottlings?

8/15/19, 4:56 PM - Hi there MTC2, tho I’ve passed in prior years, I’ll admit I took some (of both) this time ....

8/15/19, 5:11 PM - I bought 2 of each myself, but will stick them in the back of my cellar until 2026+. Did you pick up any Littorai?

  • Deux Chevaux commented:

8/15/19, 5:33 PM - We’ve passed on Littorai for the past few years, having gone enthusiastically for all things Drew, Rhys, and to a lesser extent, Anthill, as our prime / favorite local producers. But as you might see from my notes, we’ve fallen lately for Rioja blanco, and German Riesling ....

8/15/19, 6:04 PM - I'm with you on the Drew, Rhys, and Anthill, and would also add Peay for their Pinot as well as Syrah. I know less than nothing about Rioja Blanco, but am visiting Spain for 10 days in October so will have an opportunity for a crash course.

8/15/19, 6:30 PM - We loved 10 days in Spain last September. We were exclusively in the Basque and Rioja. For Rioja blanco, the top for us, and many agree, is Lopez de Heredia. They make three Fabulously distinctive and subtly oxidative whites, and four excellent reds — all employing a business model based on long-term barrel and bottle aging before release — something that very few other wineries can do. But the winery is 150 years old, has always done it this way, and with huge stocks of 12,000 barrels underground, it can afford to continue. If you go, make sure to email them in advance, and you may receive a fantastic, and free, private tour. (Otherwise, if you just show up, you pay for a much less interesting tour.) But beware, you may become hooked on these wines!
