September 8, 2019 - Knowing Falkenstein and knowing Pinot Noir, one might be able to create this wine in the mind by induction. It's the crimson version of razor-sharp, crunchy and minerally. Tart cherry and strawberry with sharp and sizzling flint and minerals and stones. A crunchy green savory and herb aspect. Lean and mean and green and light as a feather (12% ABV.) The palate may just be a too much on day one, and by too much I mean too little. It might be a bit underripe - we will have to see if it unwinds some but it's got all the stuff from the nose, but is super super tart, really acidic and nearly sears the sides of the tongue. The finish is better: the red is in the background but the savory and minerality do fill it out somewhat. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4+?/6, Finish - 4.5+?/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5+?/20.

Day 2: This has definitely loosened up some, but I'm not sure that it has improved. The red fruit is a little sweeter and more expansive, and there are some red floral notes, but the crunchy green and minerality have come on even stronger and are almost overwhelming. The palate is somewhat fleshier (it could really only go up from yesterday) and the fruit is rounder and plusher - it's got black cherry and sour cherry. Then the savory and the minerality come out in spades at the end of the palate, along with some acid, before the finish and drive through the finish. The acid has mellowed from yesterday but again, the minerals and herbal green are a tad much. This is still very light and lithe, transparent and pretty and pure, as expected. But lacking just a bit in the fruit and flesh to balance it. Very interesting, but not enough to go out and buy more. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5/20.
