November 22, 2019 - 2013-2016 MacDonald Mini Vertical (Bottega, Yountville): This wine received about 8 hours of air, with a decant, and it could have still used more. It continued to evolve in the glass at dinner, and got better and better as the night wore on. Of all the vintages on the table, this one seemed to have the most unique character. It was less perfumed on the nose and a bit more brooding, with cassis, tar, anise, herbs, embers and wet stone. As you might expect from this vintage, the palate is immensely concentrated with refined, sweet and super grippy tannins. Given its size, it dances quite elegantly, showing wonderful notes of chocolate, blackberries, loamy earth and hints of tobacco. Texturally nearly perfect, this is super complex with years left to evolve, and finishes outrageously long. I'd say of the wines on the table, other than the 2013, this needs the most time to integrate and fully come into its own. It is packed and stacked with immense potential.
