January 15, 2020 - I must say, I was a tad worried about '17, not just because of record heat and fires in Napa, but also figuring the heat would affect the Paso region badly as well. Well, I guess since Paso is so often bathed in heat, those vines are used to it and play very well in it. This is my first of the '17 Paso vineyards cracked open so here goes.......

I must preface this by saying both Pesenti and Ueberroth are my fav Turley vineyards in Paso. This has classic Pesenti acidity with brambly fruit, cherry and raspberry. Great from the pnp, the fruit may be just a tad less strong than '14 or '15, but as always an hour of air brings it out and all together so much better. I didn't get much heavy alcohol at this time and the profile is as good as any Pesenti vintage in recent memory. Happy to see that my bet on Paso was a good one for '17.

1/16/20, 4:05 AM - glad to hear; haven't tried mine yet but getting ready to buy the 18s next week!

1/16/20, 4:59 AM - I had been a bit disappointed in Turleys from '15 and '16 but this first '17 was very nice. The '18s should be also. Having said that, I can't speak for the zins from any other locale in '17 just this Paso edition. I went very light on their offerings from Napa/Sonoma/Amador, etc in '17.

1/16/20, 7:50 AM - Hi Mark. the 2017 vintage in Paso has been a surprise. I tasted just bottled wines which were all amazingly accessible but should still age nicely. However, the 2018 vintage is expected to "wow" and there is promising talk about 2019. Happy sipping. >John

1/16/20, 8:32 AM - Hey John, thanks for the input. I went light on '17s from Napa/Sonoma but got my normal Paso bottles from Turley and glad I did. Turley had me concerned with many of their usually good '15s + '16s not working for me. Many of them just seemed off. I questioned their cellar practices changing, barrels different, vineyards replanted, etc. They weren't up to par for the most part. This '17 seemed like the reliable Turley we've come to know.

Don't know about '18 in Paso but in Napa and parts of Sonoma it should be very, very good. As good or better than their '16 cabs were. I'm hearing that the pinots may not be though. '19 I have heard from a couple of sources that 'it was an interesting year' to 'it was the best fruit I have ever seen produced' so take that fwiw. I think the problem with '19 is going to be in production with all the power outages and smoke seeping into the wineries on the Sonoma side and the loss of power messing with the processing of fruit and the fermentation schedules in tank. Could be a very irregular product turned out in the '19s. We'll need to be judicious and pick well.

1/16/20, 9:12 AM - Mark, I agree with your passing on the 17 cabs from Napa/Sonoma but the 17 Sonoma chards have been the finest young chards that I have had & I suspect 18 will be as good or better

1/16/20, 9:22 AM - js, yes, the '17 chards have been pretty good. I did buy some of those and some pinots, too. Have not been disappointed in them at all. Totally agree! The '18s should be knockouts......
