February 21, 2020 - Fully mature, the 2004 Laurence has a lively and interesting nose that features black cherry, spice-cake, red licorice, vanilla. The nose was really exceptional, in fact, but unfortunately the midpalate turned out to be a bit disjointed and unbalanced: a little hot, a little overripe, and I found a hint of shellac or walnuts that to me suggest the wine perhaps needed to have been bottled without seeing quite so much oxygen in the barrel (the cuvee Laurence ages a few years longer than the Reserve, and this can be an issue with it as it ages). Basically, a bottle that has started to decline but still has a good life before it loses appeal.
