March 10, 2020 - Golden, voluptuous edition of Roussanne. 2014 has been a forward and approachable vintage for TCV wines. Here are already to be enjoyed the rich and honeyed, caramel flavors which established Roussanne's reputation as one of the Rhone's glories. In California, Roussanne seems a much better white wine to cellar than Chardonnay.

This a big and somewhat weighty wine, lifted by ginger spice, mineral and moderate alcohol (13%) such that it is not cloying. It was served alongside the 2016 Roussanne and two Chardonnays from Foxen, the prized 2014 and 2015 Bien Nacido UU block Chardonnays grafted onto older Riesling vines. These Foxen Chardonnays are not ponderous buttery Chardonnays and are known for their lemony, bright acidity and verve.

All wines were delicious on opening but the Chardonnays evolved rapidly in the glass. The Foxen 2014 began to decline and cloy after a few hours. The Roussannes actually grew fresher and brighter over the evening. The 2016 Roussanne had less of the salted caramel than the 2014 and more cut and thrust at the finish.
