March 18, 2020 - I almost wasn't going to sample this, because some other high-end 2016s seem as if they're starting to retreat from their early drinking windows. I'm glad I threw caution to the wind, because this is a knockout from the very first sip and brimming with personality, not even close to putting up that closed-for-business sign. That's not to say the tannin isn't prominent, because it is - the sort of seriously sinewy tannin that seems to infuse the fruit from inside out, and a dramatic style contrast to the ultra-finessed Cos. But it doesn't get in the way of the wine because the other stuff is just as bold. The aromatics offer a big smack of pencil fillings and ashy tobacco smoke that you can smell across the room with more of the same dominating the palate. The impression is very Pauillac-like but more intensely muscular and big-boned, in other words a pretty good demo of the essence of St.-Estephe, and a future legend of a Montrose.
