Community Tasting Note

March 25, 2020 - The relatively dark yellow color hints at a certain level of ripeness. The nose is quite pungent with exotic fruits, spices and a tea-like note. On the palate it is surprisingly weighty and viscous. Quite concentrated and powerful with a spicy edge to it. Serious and demanding in character, this is no crowd-pleaser. I dare to say that it even feels a bit tannic, having some bite on the finish, which goes on for a good while. This is clearly no easygoing summer day sipper, it demands attention and evokes contemplation, even if it is not massively complex aromatically. That said it does have a rather nice stonefruit character and some bitterness towards the finish. I think for the price it provides quite a lot and as such I applaud the effort, even if this is not something I would consider drinking on a weekly basis.

3/27/20, 3:54 PM - Terrific note. I kind of have a super secret love of austere and edgy whites and this looks to fit the bill. Finding a Pinot Blanc to enjoy has been a less than fruitful task in the past but have fallen in love with Kelley Fox PB's. If I could get one to you in Helsinki, I'd like to!

3/28/20, 12:59 AM - Thanks! There is certainly a degree of austerity to this one. That said I took my time with it and over days 2 and 3 it only got better and more harmonious and at the same time a bit less austere. I started thinking about the weird legislation for Alsace Pinot Blanc which in reality allows for a whole bunch of grape varieties as long as they are part of the Pinot family. I sent an email to the producer to ask if they could reveal a bit of what went into it, we'll see if they decide to respond.

I would be highly interested to try some of the small production stuff being made in Oregon such as the one you mention but as you might expect they don't find their way over here. For that reason it's really easy to remain Euro-centric here which I don't mind as it is so easy to source wines from almost anywhere in the Europe nowadays and new things keep popping up on a weekly basis.
