March 28, 2020 - A fine example of waiting for a great wine to go bad!! The nose stinks and is not inviting. I am with other people who want to extol this wine but it’s DEAD! The nose is old and rubbery. The palate is even worse. This is a great producer, but this is a great wine to drink at 10 years old, but not at 30!! It’s dead! And it stinks too. I am sorry to have to say this because I want a different result, but I won’t start lying to you now

3/29/20, 6:33 PM - I have not had that experience at all with Spottswoode, which I still have from the 1980’s. Even if it was over the hill it shouldn’t “stink” like you say...That suggests to me that the bottle was harmed in some way over the years. Heat or oxidation....or was a bottle flawed by Brett or something else in the bottle. Have you had this the whole time or was it a recent purchase?
Sounds to me like this was a flawed bottle not characteristic of a good bottle kept too long. I have had many excellent 20-40 year old Spottswoode that are excellent. Sorry, I know your disappointment when wanting to have a bottle but it just isn’t right! Hang in there! Cheers!

3/30/20, 4:12 PM - I love Spotteswood, too, and I am not sure of the provenance as this was opened off the shelf at our wine shop. A few of us split a bottle and it was a stinkbomb, and sometimes that happens; not every bottle will be perfect.
