April 6, 2020 - Melini’s 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva La Selvanella is surprisingly young for a relatively inexpensive wine, with a deep ruby core showing very little age at the edges. The wine needed a long time to open up, and in retrospect should have been decanted 2-3 hours before dinner. The fragrances of sour cherries, sweet cherries and plum are straightforward. It has a full body, with good acidity and a sweet mid-palate followed by prominent, drying tannins and a rather bitter bittersweet finish. The style seems to be a marriage of Chianti and Napa-wannabe Brunello, but not fitting easily into either place. What food for this? Big, simple, hearty fare. Good QPR, as there is a lot of wine here for the price, but it is an awkward wine. Will it perhaps be better in another five years?
