April 13, 2020 - The 1970 Clos du Marquis is showing quite well, opening in the glass with a classy bouquet of cassis, loamy soil, cedar and plums. Medium to full-bodied, it's built around a rather trenchant spine of vintage-typical acidity that integrates into the wine's fleshy core of fruit after an hour in a decanter, so despite this Saint-Julien's maturity don't be afraid to aerate it. Powdery tannins are largely melted but still present on the back end. From this bottle, this is a solid rather than great example of the 1970 vintage, but it provides plenty of pleasure for admirers of old school northern Médoc reds.
