July 18, 2020 - Tasting note No. 20,000. Time to open something appropriate and this Auslese is altogether fitting. My interest in wine started with the German wines which my late father used to drink in the 1980's, I started taking notes in 1983 and this bottle is from the personal cellar of Hugh Johnson, whose annual Pocket Wine Book has guided me from the start. AP 1 576 281 004 84. Level 1.5 cm below the cork, excellent for age. Lively appearance, pale to medium buttercup yellow with golden reflections; perfectly fresh nose, citrus and smoky slate, no botrytis, waxy bottle-age and a hint of spiced peach; the palate is delicately sweet, with juicy lemon and a hint of unripe strawberry, cracking acidity and gentle bitters, still lots of energy and drive; very good persistence, complete finish with very good length. Completely ready but no hurry. Impressive and absolutely delightful for elevenses. Develops well in the open bottle, and after a two hours notes of fresh green apple emerge, joined after six hours by a touch of salted butter and flower honey.
